Frequently asked questions

About your bulb

What's the Bluetooth version used in SleepCompanion?

SleepCompanion uses the latest generation of Bluetooth protocol: Bluetooth Smart. It’s range is 30ft/10m.

Is it dangerous to sleep with a Bluetooth device in my bedroom? What is the status of research on radiations?

Based on the current state of knowledge, radiation emitted by Bluetooth networks is too weak to have an acute impact on health. Available studies on the effects of high-frequency, low-dose EMF show that effects on health are not to be expected, and the very low transmission power of class 2 and 3 Bluetooth devices also makes health effects very unlikely.

For example with a SAR averaging 0.01W/kg, Bluetooth radiation is 1.000 times inferiors to your cellphone (SAR of 1W/kg) and 10.000 times less than the one of your Wifi router.

How long shall the LEDs last?

The LEDs used for SleepCompanion are rated to last more than 40.000 hours. That’s 25 years, 4 hours per day everyday.

What type of LEDs are you using? What's the difference with a standard LED lightbulb?

SleepCompanion contains 3 different types of LEDs for a total of 20 LEDs. Thanks to the combination of those LEDs, SleepCompanion is able to produce the precise type of light your body needs to sleep better. All LEDs were tested with state-of-the art scientific equipment to assess their performances.

What's the power output? Can it really replace the light bulb that currently sits in my bedside lamp?

SleepCompanion offers more than 700 lumens of power. That’s the equivalent of a traditional 50W light bulb.

While using 80% less energy than an incandescent bulb.

Most of the bedside lamps are fitted with 30 to 40W bulbs. Yet you can easily adjust the power output of your SleepCompanion to the desired level (1% to 100%).

In which lamp can I install my SleepCompanion?

SleepCompanion can be used in any lamp: your bedside lamp or your celling lamp provided it comes with a E26/E27 fitting. We currently don’t offer bayonet type (sorry UK friends) or E14 type but you should easily be able to source E14 to E27 converters in your local hardware store.

I've been told that LEDs light uses a lot less energy than incandescent bulbs. Is that real?

We’re very serious about LEDs and we only use the latest-generation of components. That allows us to reach a very high level of efficiency: with less than 10W of power, the luminous flux is similar to a traditional 50W bulb. So that’s 5 time less energy.

Does it really work? Is there any science behind that lighting solution?

Research on the effects of light on human body is still a pretty new field of investigation. Yet we’ve seen more and more research work published in the recent years to include the Harvard Medicine School, the NASA and several sleep centers though Europe.

The impact of blue light on the concentration of melatonin, the sleep hormone, has been demonstrated in several scientific studies. Please check our scientific page for more details and links to scientific papers.

Compatibility

I read that SleepCompanion can be paired with other devices the like of nest, netatmo or Withings. What for?

By connecting other devices, it becomes possible to collect additional data such as CO2 level or your bedroom humidity level or your level of physical activity.

By using it alongside Nest, SleepCompanion can even lower the temperature of your room if useful to improve your sleep.

Note that you always keep full control over the data you want to track and make available to our algorithms.

What third party devices are compatible with SleepCompanion?

SleepCompanion currently supports Jawbone UP and UP24 activity trackers. We’re working to integrate Netatmo weather station, Nest thermostat, FitBit and Withings trackers. If you want us to integrate your device, contact us.

How do I get the app? Is the app free to use?

The SleepCompanion app is available for free in the App Store and Google Play. We currently don’t support Windows Phone.

What phones are compatible with SleepCompanion app?

You can use the app with any Apple device running iOS 8+ what includes iPhone 5/5s/5c/6/6+, iPod 5, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 4

or iPad Pro. Previous iPhone versions such as 4 or 4GS are not supported as well.

If it is theoretically possible to use the app with any devices running Android 4.3+ embedding Bluetooth Smart, the large number of Android phones on the market (nearly 1.400 versions!) and the freedom each manufacturer has in building its phone, makes it more complex ;-(

1) SleepCompanion app has been tested with success with the following devices:

– Samsung Galaxy Grand 2, Galaxy Note 2, 3, 4 et 5, Galaxy S3, S4, S5, S6, Galaxy A5.

– Motorola Droid Mini, Moto G, Moto X, Razr M, G3 and G4

– Google Nexus 6

– Sony Xperia VC, Xperia Z1 et Z1 Ultra, Xperia ZL

This selection (as well as their variations) represents around 90% of all smartphones available in Europe

2) The app was tested but is not compatible with devices from Wiko, from LG (G3 stylus, Bello et L50) or Archos (50c and 40c).

Additional tests are being done yet if you smartphone doesn’t appear in the list indicated at 2., we can warrant it shall work properly with our app.

Is there any Windows Phone app available?

Yes, but some data bay not display properly due to graphic constraints.

If we tested many tablets from leading manufacturers such as Samsung or Acer, we can’t test them all.

Daily usage

Can I program more than 1 alarm?

No.The application offers only one alarm clock but with advanced features like the selection of days and music.

Can I turn my phone into Airplane mode?

In order to set a new alarm, you need to be in range of your light bulb with the Bluetooth of your phone being ON. Once completed, you are free to activate Airplane mode at anytime: the alarm will ring and the light will also light on at the desired time as your bulb embeds a memory and timer.

If I set my phone to airplane mode, will I have access to all functions?

While your phone is in Airplane mode, the alarm will ring and the light will light-up but some features will not work:

– You can’t control your light bulb (switch it ON/OFF) easily if you need to.

– Local weather will not be displayed in the morning

– Bedroom temperature will not be displayed before you phone and bulb are synchronized (what will only happen if your phone Bluetooth is enabled and your phone is located in the vicinity of your bulb).

Do I need to leave my phone ON during the night?

If you decide to switch OFF your phone, your SleepCompanion’s bulb will still gradually light-up your room.

Nevertheless, environmental data shall not be recorded and the alarm won’t ring.

Can I lock my phone's screen? (black screen)

So you can easily check the time and progress of your night and quickly switch on/off your light if you need, we suggest not to lock your phone’s screen.

We reduce its luminosity to a minimum during the night so not to disturb you.

On Apple devices, locking the screen of your phone disables the tracking of your room’s luminosity.

How many bulbs may I control with a single phone?

You can pair your app with a maximum of 8 light bulbs. And then decide which ones react to which alarm(s) with a maximum of 3 bulbs per alarm.

Can I control a bulb with different phones? What if my wife/husband also want to control it?

A light bulb can be paired with several phones. For example you could set the alarm one day and the next day your husband could do it. Nevertheless as sleep tracking remains individual and as the addition of a new alarm originating from a different phone erases all pending alarms, we advise you to buy two bulbs so you can have one in both your bedside lamps. His and side and your side.

Can I use my switch as with a standard bulb?

You can use your bulb like any other light bulb, switching it ON/OFF using a wall switch or your lamp switch. It’s even possible to select the type of white light at startup (cold or warm white) in the bulb settings page of the app.

When it’s time to sleep, be sure your lamp switch is ON and use the app to switch off the light.

Note that if your switch is OFF, then your bulb is not powered and shall thus not be able to gently light up your room the next morning. But no worries, the alarm will still ring!

What shall I do when I’m ready to sleep?

On the home page, click on the ZZ button at the bottom of the page, then decide to switch off the light immediately (mode ZZZ), dim it slowly (why not reading a great book?) or even enter the relaxation program to free your mind from your thoughts (mode relaxation). Then decide to monitor your sleep and/or your room environment.

What happens in case of power breakdown during the night?

No worries: even without light, your phone shall still ring when it’s time to wake up!

After a power breakdown, and if your phone’s Bluetooth is on, your bulb shall quickly re-sync its internal clock to the correct time and wake you up as usual.

Do I need to plug my phone to its charger during the night?

If you decide to monitor your bedroom environment, battery drain can be significant. We thus recommend to leave your phone connected to its charger during the night.

My light goes off every morning after more or less 1 hour

No worries. That’s normal.

And that’s the standard behavior of almost all standard alarm clocks.

Why ?

Simply to avoid to leave the light on for several days or week if you forget to deactivate your alarm before leaving for a weekend… or longer holidays!

So after lighting up to wake you up in the morning, your bulb shall automatically switch off after 1 hour. And shall light-on again for the next alarm.

My data

What data can SleepCompanion track?

SleepCompanion app allows you to track some of the environmental factors that may affect your sleep such as your room’s temperature, the level of light or the noise level.

The app also analyses the quality for your sleep (amount of deep and light sleep), your sleep time, your bedtime routine and any potential sleep deficit.

What do you do with the data you collect?

Troubleshooting

How long is the warranty? What shall I do in case of a problem?

Warranty is 2 years. In the unlikely case of a problem, contact us at support@holi.io or using the form on the contact page.

Since I’ve downloaded the new app, I can’t manage to find my bulb again and set the parameters. What can I do?

Since the update of the Sleep360 application ( 1.3.2 ), it seems that there are connectivity issues for Android devices .

To correct this, when installing the new application , you will need to go to the menu > click Bulb settings > Select your bulb on the arrow > click Bulb details> and click Forget this bulb.

You might need to turn of your bluetooth for more than 15 seconds to empty the cache memory of your phone.

Then simply reconnect your bulb via bluetooth as you did at your first use , and then associate it with the application. Your SleepCompanion work without problem.
